Friday, 20 June: A tribute

Today my husband, Richard (1948-2003) would have turned 60 year old. Catherine, my youngest daughter, painted this portrait of her dad and herself. She wanted to communicate the link between them and deliberately painted only a part of her own face in the shadows. Cath really captured something of Richard's personality and his dry sense of humour. Ruth also painted a portrait of her dad which hangs in her home. This evening we are going out for a meal to celebrate his life.

  2. A very beautiful painting, Eleanor. An artistic gene is apparent in your family. I feel sad that he is not with you to celebrate his 60th. Love to you and yours today.

  3. Eleanor,
I can't remember where I found the link to your blog but I have really enjoyed reading about your life in S Africa. I live in Richmond, Virginia (USA) and love all kinds of things. The scenery and flowers around your home are just breathtaking.

This picture of your Richard is just marvelous. Your daughters are very talented and blessed to be given such talent.

Enjoy your memories of your beloved. He is there with you in each thought.

  4. Eleanor, thank you for posting this special portrait, and the sensitively written post about your late husband. He does indeed look like an extraordinary person, and your daughter is just lovely.

TOnight will be bittersweet, but it's a beautiful idea to celebrate his life; somewhere in heaven he is smiling, I'll wager....

  11. Dear Eleanor - you are a brave woman to carry on without your wonderful husband who was taken much too soon. I'm glad your talented daughter was able to capture his spirit, and humor, in this wonderful portrait - I know it is treasured by your entire family.
